Rosh Hashanah (Part 2)

“This is all the more urgent, for you know how late it is; time is running out. Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first believed.” Romans 13:11 NLT
Let me sound the trumpet – wake-up, it is time to repent!!!

Dear Heavenly Father – You are the One True God. Beside you there is no other.  I acknowledge your Lordship over my life. I praise and thank you for all you have done! Please help me as I search myself to see if there is any ways within me to repent of. In the name of Jesus – Amen

Tonight is the second evening of Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year!
If you did not read yesterday: This holiday is also known as the Feast of Trumpets.  It is a two day celebrations beginning at sunset, yesterday and continuing to sunset Sunday, September 20th.  This marks the creation of Adam and Eve. It is a time of prayerful reflection and remembrance, and begins the agricultural cycles.  Of course the most well know practice of this holiday is the blowing of the shofar – a musical instrument made from an animal’s horn – a trumpet – which is a symbolic wake-up call unto repentance. Therefore I used the Romans 13:11 verse at the opening – the closest thing I could find to a verse that emanates the purpose of the trumpets for Rosh Hashanah.

Trumpets – there are many places throughout the Bible where trumpets are mentioned. One of the most famous is the trumpets and the city of Jericho. I am added excerpts of the story here but you can read the whole story in the book of Joshua, chapter 6. The story begins with a prophecy – “And the Lord said”.  Let us pay attention to the words of our Lord.

“Now Jericho was securely shut up because of the children of Israel; none went out, and none came in. And the Lord said to Joshua: “See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor. You shall march around the city, all you men of war; you shall go all around the city once. This you shall do six days. And seven priests shall bear seven trumpets of rams’ horns before the ark. But the seventh day you shall march around the city seven times, and the priests shall blow the trumpets. It shall come to pass, when they make a long blast with the ram’s horn, and when you hear the sound of the trumpet, that all the people shall shout with a great shout; then the wall of the city will fall down flat. And the people shall go up every man straight before him.” Joshua 6:1-5 NKJV

God said. God told the whole story ahead of time. Not always does God tell us the whole story in the beginning of a situation or battle. But this we know: It is finished. The battle belongs to the Lord. God’s ways are not our ways – but His ways are the only ways. And because of Revelations (quoted below) we know how this overall story ends.
But even though they knew the end of the story, they still needed faith. They still needed to march, they still needed to go through the whole plan. I am sure at some point they must have wondered, was Joshua crazy? How was marching in circles going to ensure a victory?  And as they marched on the final day, I wonder if they thought that by now, these walls should have fallen. And isn’t this a perfect mirror of us throughout 2020.  Walking around inside our houses, in circles, why has the curve flattened? Now that it has, why are we still captive? But God’s ways are not our ways and His plans are not our plans (Isaiah 55:8).  So here we wait for the sound of the trumpets and the cue to shout – and today we are in the Feast of the Trumpets!!! Today is the day to blow the trumpets! Today is the day to shout! Now is the time, today is the day (2 Corinthians 6:2)!!!!

So the people shouted when the priests blew the trumpets. And it happened when the people heard the sound of the trumpet, and the people shouted with a great shout, that the wall fell down flat. Then the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city.” Joshua 6:20 NKJV

But let’s not focus on our individual battles because the One True Living God reigns HIGH above them and has authority over them. Let is look to our great promise.

Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable, and this mortal body must put on immortality. When the perishable puts on the imperishable, and the mortal puts on immortality, then shall come to pass the saying that is written: “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” 1 Corinthians 15:51-55 ESV

Which trumpet shall be the last? Shall it be one that blows during this Festival? Shall it come with this new year?
We see the newest year that the Lord is giving us spread out before us. After this year we are hesitant to make plans, but God knows the plans He has for us (Jeremiah 29:11).  And this is the year that the walls will fall – this is the year we shall see victory with our eyes. We have learned in the passing year to be emptied of ourselves, filled with God. To no longer be self-reliant but to be completely God-reliant. We know His ways are not our and we have learned to hear His voice and stay within His will. This new year will not be our year – no! This will be the year of our Lord and He will be lifted up and glorified!

We know how this story end – so even if we are still walking around the wall – we shall keep walking and walking until God has the trumpets sound, until God says to shout!  Until then, remind ourselves of the end – and worship Him – standing firm in faith.

“Then the seventh angel blew his trumpet, and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever.” And the twenty-four elders who sit on their thrones before God fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying, “We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, for you have taken your great power and begun to reign. The nations raged, but your wrath came, and the time for the dead to be judged, and for rewarding your servants, the prophets and saints, and those who fear your name, both small and great, and for destroying the destroyers of the earth.” Revelation 11:15-18 ESV

Dear heavenly Father – We give thanks to you, Lord God Almighty, who is and who was, and who is to come! You have taken your great power and you reign in my life. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done! Forever and ever – Amen!
