We can be Prayerful or we can be like these Pharisees – 7-15-22

But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!” Luke 11:28 NKJV

RELATIONSHIP:

Do you already have a relationship with a powerful God who cares about your every need because He loves you? Did you know my God can communicate with you and protect you – He has a plan for you to prosper if you just submit to His will and let His plan play out in your life!!! God wants a relationship with you and has already made a plan for your life. He loves you so much He sent His son to this world, to die as a sacrifice for your sins and rise from death with victory over sin and the ability to have a personal relationship with you.

Do you want to know truth? Be able to discern lies? Know how to figure it all out in these confusing times and have peace? The Bible says Jesus is the truth. I have experienced it and it has changed my life. I was once a hot mess of sin, promiscuity, drug and alcohol use and so much more. But I was lost and when I could not find my way, or find a truth, I numbed it with bad choses. When I found Jesus, and truth – I found peace and deliverance from those things.

If you want a relationship with God without truth you will get the counterfeit, hypocritical Christianity that has kept some of you away for too long. You need truth and relationship. You need to be honest with yourself and God (including honest repentance) and God will reveal truth to you. It becomes the two way, interaction that your relationship with God is built on. This is why Jesus is called the truth, because he is our only way to the Father.

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10 NIV
Here is a prayer for you to pray:
Jesus, I believe you are the way, the truth, the life, and the only way to the Father. I believe you are the son of God, you came to Earth and lived. That you died on the cross as a sacrifice for my sins, and rose again so that I may be saved from my sins and be able to get to know you. I declare: Jesus, you are Lord!
Therefore, I confess that I am a sinner and I ask that you forgive me of my sins and come into my life. Help me to turn away from my sins and transform me into what you have lovingly created me to be. Help me through a real personal relationship grow and accept your will for my life – that I may live in your blessings. Please walk with me, and talk with me – I accept a relationship with you and with our Father God, through you. In the name of Jesus I pray ~ Amen

BIBLE READING:

Dear Heavenly Father – Please give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of who you are, who Jesus is, and who the Holy Spirit is. Open the eyes of our understanding, please, so we may know the hope of our calling and the vast sovereignty and power of the grace of the cross. Please do not let us miss out on what you want and need from us today. Lord, I pray that your word prepares us and not scares us! We forbid the works and influences of fear over your word and our sound mind. And please keep us and bless us and shine your face upon us and pour out grace over us and give us peace! And we pray for the peace of Jerusalem! Thank you! – In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Today’s reading is the Book of Luke chapter 11 (embedded below for your convenience in the NKJV).

The Model Prayer

11 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

So He said to them, “When you pray, say:

Our[a] Father [b]in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
Your kingdom come.
[c]Your will be done
On earth as it is in heaven.
Give us day by day our daily bread.
And forgive us our sins,
For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And do not lead us into temptation,
[d]But deliver us from the evil one.”

A Friend Comes at Midnight

And He said to them, “Which of you shall have a friend, and go to him at midnight and say to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves; for a friend of mine has come to me on his journey, and I have nothing to set before him’; and he will answer from within and say, ‘Do not trouble me; the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give to you’? I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.

Keep Asking, Seeking, Knocking

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 11 If a son asks for [e]bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

A House Divided Cannot Stand

14 And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by [f]Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”

16 Others, testing Him, sought from Him a sign from heaven. 17 But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them: “Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls. 18 If Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? Because you say I cast out demons by Beelzebub. 19 And if I cast out demons by Beelzebub, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges. 20 But if I cast out demons with the finger of God, surely the kingdom of God has come upon you. 21 When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are in peace. 22 But when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his [g]spoils. 23 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.

An Unclean Spirit Returns

24 “When an unclean spirit goes out of a man, he goes through dry places, seeking rest; and finding none, he says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when he comes, he finds it swept and put in order. 26 Then he goes and takes with him seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first.”

Keeping the Word

27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”

28 But He said, “More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

Seeking a Sign

29 And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah [h]the prophet. 30 For as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so also the Son of Man will be to this generation. 31 The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.

The Lamp of the Body

33 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. 34 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is [i]good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is [j]bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”

Woe to the Pharisees and Lawyers

37 And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat. 38 When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.

39 Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of [k]greed and wickedness. 40 Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But rather give alms of [l]such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.

42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the [m]best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you, [n]scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.

45 Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.”

46 And He said, “Woe to you also, lawyers! For you load men with burdens hard to bear, and you yourselves do not touch the burdens with one of your fingers. 47 Woe to you! For you build the tombs of the prophets, and your fathers killed them. 48 In fact, you bear witness that you approve the deeds of your fathers; for they indeed killed them, and you build their tombs. 49 Therefore the wisdom of God also said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles, and some of them they will kill and persecute,’ 50 that the blood of all the prophets which was shed from the foundation of the world may be required of this generation, 51 from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah who perished between the altar and the temple. Yes, I say to you, it shall be required of this generation.

52 “Woe to you lawyers! For you have taken away the key of knowledge. You did not enter in yourselves, and those who were entering in you hindered.”

53 [o]And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him, [p]and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, [q]that they might accuse Him.

MEMORY VERSE CHALLENGE:

Romans 6:1-2-

“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it?”

STUDY/DEVOTIONAL:

Today Luke has grouped together a bunch of small examples of what the spirit realm looks like as Jesus draws back the curtain. In the book of Matthew, Matthew explains everything. Luke is a reporter – he just tells it. There is explanation if Jesus gave it.
Prayer, how to pray, and what happens when you pray are topics Luke writes about more than any other gospel. I will guess it is because Luke was converted and taught by Paul – so it was lessons and conversations at first, especially since Luke was a pagan. Where the disciples lived it and saw Jesus get away to pray often and they understood it – in relation to their teachings in Hebrew school.

Until the day the disciples realized that there might be more to it, then reciting the psalms and prophets.

1 Now it came to pass, as He was praying in a certain place, when He ceased, that one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.”

The disciples heard that John the Baptist taught his disciples to pray and Jesus prayed more often than just reciting the morning prayer as they got up and the mealtime prayer (recited according to meal, day of the week and holiday) and the bedtime prayer. What are the secrets to prayer?

So He said to them, “When you pray, say: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us day by day our daily bread.  And forgive us our sins, For we also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.”

Many of us have the version from Matthew in King James memorized because we had spent time in churches that recited this. I have this version, though painted in scroll font on the inside of my cabinet in my kitchen. And my different oils for cooking and salads and everything are in there. So after I wash up, many days, I take the light olive oil and sprinkle it on my hand then anoint my head and recite this prayer.
I am conscience and careful NOT to let it be ritualistic or vane repetitions. But mindfully read and meditate in prayer on each line, reminding me daily to repent and forgive as well as to ask and that God provides. And even more so lately, praying to be submitted to the will of God.

Luke gives no explanation about this prayer but pulls back the curtain to show us how prayer works.

I say to you, though he will not rise and give to him because he is his friend, yet because of his persistence he will rise and give him as many as he needs.”

Hebrew tradition had prayers, scriptures and passages they prayerfully recited routinely and repetitiously. Jesus himself was raised a good Hebrew boy and knew as well as practiced those prayers. It is NOT wrong to prayerfully quote scriptures repeatedly.
I know some denomination say give it to God and trust Him with it and never pray it again. Because praying it again is a sign of doubt and unbelief.
But we just read that if you are persistent at banging on your friends door in the middle of the night it is not doubt that motivated you. You are actually all the more convinced as you persist that you will receive what you ask for.
I ask for my son’s salvation and a list of a few others. I ask for the requests of my friends and others who have asked me to pray on their behalf. I ask for the work of my hands to be blessed. I ask for financial blessings so I can use it to fund this as well as other ministries. These are fine things to persist for. As this parable has us persisting for a need.

“So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 10 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

Now there are three areas of persisting – not just a need which is tangible answer. I mean ways of persisting like asking, looking and knocking.
I’ll use my business as an example. I am praying it will be blessed, have orders, be successful and God uses it to provide for me. I am not just standing over my desk with my arms out stretched asking God to build it. I am seeking guidance, asking God to lead me to others in the industry who can teach me. I seek “how to” lessons. I also seek people who will buy the products. (Praying for God to lead me through that.) AND THEN I also knock on doors – knock on potential opportunities – and knock on the door to heaven reminding God I am still here waiting for His move. That is probably the most tangible I can teach the “ask, seek knock”.
As believers we do not just hand it to God and wait, sometimes we have to get feisty and make some noise. It is, after all, the squeaky wheel that gets the oil.

11 If a son asks for bread from any father among you, will he give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will he give him a serpent instead of a fish? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him!”

So I pray for food because I am starving and God gives me more of the Holy Spirit? No. I once heard someone say that and then try to say God told us to go look and knock, and so with the Spirit you should go get your own food. In which case the Spirit should be leading a large order to my store a day, every day, as I work diligently and I should be overflowing, hiring help and blessing the community with work. I could be single handedly supporting all the Canadian ranches and importing all the tasty steaks into my country to eat – since the official there want everyone to eat bugs (praying for you Canada!).

God wants to give us out bread and a steak when we ask for bread. God wants to give us more and nicer things. God does care for the little things.

14 And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute. So it was, when the demon had gone out, that the mute spoke; and the multitudes marveled. 15 But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebub, the ruler of the demons.”
16 Others, testing Him, sought from Him a sign from heaven. 17 But He, knowing their thoughts, said to them:
“Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and a house divided against a house falls. 22 But when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoils. 23 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters.”

WOO-HOO! That there is some dee and good stuff! And IF you are anything like me you have been reading that thinking, that is so stupid that anyone would think that the devil reveals the demon, casts it out and makes a person free.
So, one day a lady said I did not have the spirit of God but that of a demon – and I preach the work of God with the spirit of the devil and pray for freedom for others, because I am evil. I was shocked and confused. That does not even make since. I already knew the Holy Spirit was not there with her and she was bound in fear. I had asked to pray for her healing, as she limped, and she refused and said she knows it won’t be healed and she has to have an operation. I am not sure which Jesus she served, but he didn’t heal and he was so unknown she had reason to fear. And her answer was to call ME demonic. (facepalm)
Yes, it actually happens all the time. The devil casts confusion by calling the godly: demonic. I would have loved to have seen that woman free from fear and pain – she is a pastor and it would touch hundreds of women and the glory to God would have been multiplied!  Ok – this example is old. More recently, I have seen heresy hunters on the internet calling men of God evil and demonic. It is still happening.

When I came back to God I was told explicitly I was NOT permitted to heal, deliver or cast out demons in my local church, by one of the leader. One – because I was a woman and more terribly and unmarried woman. Two – because they aren’t a circus and we do not do magic tricks. And Three – because it will just come back 7 times worse.
I was amazed. I think I told you before, I told them: “No problem – because I would be unsuccessful submitted too this churches authority. Signs and wonders follow those who believe, not those who reject God.” And I can’t walk in and do it out of authority. Unless God releases me and I ask, can I today, and God just restrains me while he works gentle on them.
Meanwhile – let’s talk about these beasts coming back worse. That is here as a warning to those delivered. If I can cast out one, and yesterday we read that I have that authority, and you do too – male or female… then I can cast out 2. If I can cast out 2, then I can cast out 7. And if Jesus is the stronger man, and we cast out 7, then we can cast out 14, 21, 28, or even a legion.
Someone else said, well, if they aren’t ready we do not want to send them back into the world worse. And I cannot tell you who and who is not ready. And they say – well they are still living in sin. And Let me then point out Paul. He was ON HIS WAY to KILL Christians.  NO ONE KNEW HIS HEART WAS SOFTENED AND READY to be completely transformed on the road to Damascus.
Just because you cannot remember your own transformation in grace (or maybe you’ve never had one), does not mean God is not able to protect HIS work when we obediently cast out a demon or 7.

I heard a story once of a man who came to the annual summer tent meeting at a church for deliverance. And the demons were cast out and he felt great. So great that he went home and back into his old lifestyle. And every summer came back for his annual deliverance. After a few years the pastor said to him you have to NOT return to your old life. And the man agreed, because he wanted his deliverance. So the pastor cast out the demons and called down a transformation experience with grace, with Jesus himself! And BOOM! Just like that the pattern stopped – moreover, they were able to cast out 1 then 7, then 14, then 21, then 28…
(Side note for those of you who are too much like me: if 1 comes back with 7 more, that is 8, then 15, then 22, then 29, etc. I was trying not to confuse people and either math would confuse someone so I did it both ways.)

But, let us stand in our deliverance from our sins and demonic influences and just keep His word. That is it. So super simple. If we love Him we will obey his word – which means reading it to know what it says.

27 And it happened, as He spoke these things, that a certain woman from the crowd raised her voice and said to Him, “Blessed is the womb that bore You, and the breasts which nursed You!”
28 But He said,
“More than that, blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it!”

No Mother Mary worship – Just worship God. And do as He says.
Did you know that when you stand before God to be judged, be it for the evil you did or the bema seat to receive your crowns – you will be held responsible for knowing the Bible. I should give you all the verses sometime to show you. But that is why God gives you people to help you learn and study it. Because it is your job to know it and obey it. And if you disobeyed something – but you did not know it was in there, it is your fault and YOU are held responsible.
In the USA, if you do not know the state laws, and break one, you still get a ticket and have to go to court, or hire a lawyer, and/or pay a fine (or worse depending on what you do). Ignorance of the law is no defense.  If you are going to be in that state you need to know the rules.
And for those of us who hear/read this (the word of God which we are studying) and do it, practice it, and keep it – we get an addition blessing! Praise the Lord we are blessed.

29 And while the crowds were thickly gathered together, He began to say, “This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah the prophet. 32 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here.”

My son is always seeking a sign. The fact that he was foretold of by a prophet is not enough. He will not believe unless God puts on a circus show and performs for Him. Sadly, as known by the unfulfilled part of the prophecy, if he submitted to the will of God and surrendered his life – he would not only see signs and wonders they would follow Him. Jonah eventually preached, covered in whale vomit – and so my son may also, in whale vomit. But we all make choices.
It just go to show us how complicated we make all of this when it is actually so simple. Keep the word of the Lord. That is it.

33 “No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand, that those who come in may see the light. 34 The lamp of the body is the eye. Therefore, when your eye is good, your whole body also is full of light. But when your eye is bad, your body also is full of darkness. 35 Therefore take heed that the light which is in you is not darkness. 36 If then your whole body is full of light, having no part dark, the whole body will be full of light, as when the bright shining of a lamp gives you light.”

It is so simple – either we do this or we do not. Light does NOT fellowship with darkness. We cannot keep a portion of ourselves unsurrendered and uncommitted to Christ.
I work on product shots for my business – and I need good light on the object. Not reflecting back that is not right, it is fake. I need the product to be well lit in all areas. But then, I also want the back to be black and dramatic and eye catching. So I paint the canvas, of the set-up where I prop up the products, a black matte and I focus light on the front and turn off all other lights for the back. But the light still touches it. The light still shines everywhere. I look at it with my eyes and I can see – so the light is there (without it I would not be able to see). So I employ some camera tricks and some then finish the process in some editing software and it looks high contrast and super dramatic – like darkness and light are side by side. The truth – light chases away the darkness.

37 And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked Him to dine with him. So He went in and sat down to eat. 38 When the Pharisee saw it, he marveled that He had not first washed before dinner.
39 Then the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees make the outside of the cup and dish clean, but your inward part is full of greed and wickedness. 40 Foolish ones! Did not He who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But rather give alms of such things as you have; then indeed all things are clean to you.”

Darkness is like a dirty dish or hands, but if you are dirty on the inside, you can hide it from the world. BUT you cannot hide it from Jesus’s light. He sees and already knows and still makes us own up to it and repent and be humble in His presence. Jesus’s light is cutting into the Pharisees and exposing what is hidden inside.

42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and all manner of herbs, and pass by justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without leaving the others undone. 43 Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seats in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. 44 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like graves which are not seen, and the men who walk over them are not aware of them.

And The Light does not stop exposing. We have talked about this a lot lately – get humble on your terms, in private, on your face in front of Jesus before he turns on the light and points it at you. Exposure is terribly humiliating and hurts so many around you as well as you. Be a humble repenter, daily!
Jesus exposes that they were dirty and went on to make a list – Woe! This is still happening. In the church and in government and in our everyday lives. God is shutting mouths of those who corrupt the Word. God is judging. All the political resignations may not be enough humility, as we may see more exposure – or maybe they did get humble with God and that was enough.
Remember God is not trying to hurt us, but embarrassment is an amazing motivator! God is only trying to get our attentions and get us to get humble – grow those fruits.

45 Then one of the lawyers answered and said to Him, “Teacher, by saying these things You reproach us also.”
46 And He said,
“Woe to you also, lawyers!
53 And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to assail Him vehemently, and to cross-examine Him about many things, 54 lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, hat they might accuse Him.”

As I speak of humility and fruits and encourage you to respond correctly – Luke shows us the wrong response. If you are feeling offended, angry, frustrated, uncomfortable… you might need to do some quick soul searching to make sure you are not in the same category as the Pharisees, scribes, lawyers, and such. Many times I was convicted in services or passages and did not have guidance to tell me that feeling means something is NOT lined up with Jesus and MUST change!

Luckily we already studied prayer and we know how it works in the spirit and that Jesus’s name is stronger. Pray His name and repent. Get yourself right and do it daily.

Have a blessed weekend – and feel free to join us for some wisdom reading in the Psalms presented without commentary. And I’ll be back on Monday to continue going through Luke chapter by chapter.
