In Order Not in Oppression – 6-3-22

Let all things be done decently and in order.” 1 Corinthians 14:40 NKJV

RELATIONSHIP:

Do you already have a relationship with a powerful God who cares about your every need because He loves you? Did you know my God can communicate with you and protect you – He has a plan for you to prosper if you just submit to His will and let His plan play out in your life!!! God wants a relationship with you and has already made a plan for your life. He loves you so much He sent His son to this world, to die as a sacrifice for your sins and rise from death with victory over sin and the ability to have a personal relationship with you.

Do you want to know truth? Be able to discern lies? Know how to figure it all out in these confusing times and have peace? The Bible says Jesus is the truth. I have experienced it and it has changed my life. I was once a hot mess of sin, promiscuity, drug and alcohol use and so much more. But I was lost and when I could not find my way, or find a truth, I numbed it with bad choses. When I found Jesus, and truth – I found peace and deliverance from those things.

If you want a relationship with God without truth you will get the counterfeit, hypocritical Christianity that has kept some of you away for too long. You need truth and relationship. You need to be honest with yourself and God (including honest repentance) and God will reveal truth to you. It becomes the two way, interaction that your relationship with God is built on. This is why Jesus is called the truth, because he is our only way to the Father.

“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10 NIV
Here is a prayer for you to pray:
Jesus, I believe you are the way, the truth, the life, and the only way to the Father. I believe you are the son of God, you came to Earth and lived. That you died on the cross as a sacrifice for my sins, and rose again so that I may be saved from my sins and be able to get to know you. I declare: Jesus, you are Lord!
Therefore, I confess that I am a sinner and I ask that you forgive me of my sins and come into my life. Help me to turn away from my sins and transform me into what you have lovingly created me to be. Help me through a real personal relationship grow and accept your will for my life – that I may live in your blessings. Please walk with me, and talk with me – I accept a relationship with you and with our Father God, through you. In the name of Jesus I pray ~ Amen

BIBLE READING:

Dear Heavenly Father – Please give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of who you are, who Jesus is, and who the Holy Spirit is. Open the eyes of our understanding, please, so we may know the hope of our calling and the vast sovereignty and power of the grace of the cross. Please do not let us miss out on what you want and need from us today. Lord, I pray that your word prepares us and not scares us! We forbid the works and influences of fear over your word and our sound mind. And please keep us and bless us and shine your face upon us and pour out grace over us and give us peace! And we pray for the peace of Jerusalem! Thank you! – In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Today’s reading is the Book of First Corinthians chapter 14 (embedded below for your convenience in the NKJV).

Prophecy and Tongues

14 Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men. He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church. I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; [a]for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

Tongues Must Be Interpreted

But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching? Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played? For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle? So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without [b]significance. 11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a [c]foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me. 12 Even so you, since you are [d]zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the [e]edification of the church that you seek to excel.

13 Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. 14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. 15 What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding. 16 Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say? 17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

Tongues a Sign to Unbelievers

20 Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.

21 In the law it is written:

“With men of other tongues and other lips
I will speak to this people;
And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,”

says the Lord.

22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe. 23 Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are [f]out of your mind? 24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. 25 [g]And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

Order in Church Meetings

26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for [h]edification. 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. 28 But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God. 29 Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge. 30 But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent. 31 For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged. 32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets. 33 For God is not the author of [i]confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

34 Let [j]your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. 35 And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

36 Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached? 37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But [k]if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.

MEMORY VERSE CHALLENGE:

Acts 4:12- “Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

STUDY/DEVOTIONAL:

This Sunday (in a couple days) is Pentecost Sunday. In order to understand todays reading you must know about the holiday of Pentecost and what happened on that date that forever changed the 1st century church. And of course can it be applied to us in 2022.
Modern Christians celebrate Pentecost on the 7th Sunday after Easter because Jesus rose from the dead on Easter and walked with the disciples for 40 days. Then he ascended to heaven and told them to wait together – Jesus was going to send His spirit back down to the earth to comfort, strengthen and embolden them. (Acts chapter 2 tells the story.)
But Pentecost is NOT originally a Christian holiday. It is the Jewish Shavuot, or Feast of Weeks, or Feast of Harvest, or the First Fruits. The Greek speaking Jews changed the name to Pentecost, which means 50, because it is traditionally celebrated 50 days after Passover as its roots are in a celebration of Mosaic revelation and the give of the Torah, through Moses, on Mt. Sinai – and they decorate with green plans and greens on the floor to represent the mountain. And because it comes with the grain harvest, traditionally the Book of Ruth is read during the two night feast.
God in His sovereignty, used the day of Pentecost for both the Jews and the new believers in very symbolic ways, as well as for safety. Most of us do not think about safety – but since Jesus died and more so when rumored to have come back to life – the disciples were in danger. Being wanted for questioning, could easily lead to their death. AND by Disciples I mean the 11 plus the others – equaling 200 men in the upper room on Pentecost. They prayed, and probably enjoyed the feast – surely because of custom they also had in their minds the revelation of the Law to Moses, as they just finished walking with Jesus, the fulfillment of the Law and they were about to begin their own ministries in the power of the fulfillment. As Moses guided and comforted them, the Holy Spirit came upon each of these men to do the same. Then the Holy Spirit fell on 3000. They knew the spirit fell on them because everyone touched spoke in a language they did not know. This is called Speaking in Tongues.

Almost EVERYONE who is saved, and has prayed and asked for this Pentecostal anointing can speak in tongues. (You can too – just keep praying for it.) It is important because it gives you power and boldness lie the apostles had. It give you the ability to speak – like Peter went from a clumsy speaker (because he was a fisherman) to an eloquent speaker and the leader of the church. The book of Acts doesn’t end… it stops without and ending. Nowhere in any book of the Bible or scroll found from the first century say that this act of praying and speaking in tongues ends. It is for the church today – actually need in 2022 and the future probably as much as it was needed in the first century. Their lives were at risk and so are ours, especially if things do not change. And if the hour is very late, then the word of God says this is just the beginning of sorrows and more are coming. So we need this power, boldness, and anointing now more than ever!

All of this knowledge about tongues was known by the original audience, to whom Paul was writing.

I think most of you know what Prophecy means. It is not a prediction, fortune telling or divination as many think.  It is a work of knowledge given by the Lord. Think back to the old time prophets.
“And Micaiah said, “As the LORD lives, whatever the LORD says to me, that I will speak.” 2 Kings 22:14 NKJV
Prophets speak what the Lord tells them. Hopefully ALL pastors are prophets; and all evangelists and teachers are prophets. I hope they bring the word of the Lord in due season and say the things the Lord tells them to say.
Many prophets today say: “The Lord gave me a word to release right now!” and the hearts of the people are stirred, because who doesn’t want to hear the word of the Lord. But others are reading from the Bible, which is literally the word of the Lord, and the masses do not see it the same way. Do not chase prophets who do not back up their prophecies with scriptures! Guard your hearts. And do not fall for evil fortunetellers who claim to be prophets and tell you things you want to hear with corrupted scriptures.

The original audience knew about the old prophets and were learning about prophesy in the body of believers as it was new that everyman could potentially have this gift.

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.”
Paul was writing to a carnal church; earlier in our reading we saw he called them fat babies who have not grown up. If there is division – there is immaturity. Spiritual maturity and gifts are NOT the same thing. You can be an immature Christian and a prophet. So, again, because what prophets you follow! But ALSO – pursue and ask for the gift of prophecy. But be prepared to use it.

For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.”
Tongues is a prayer language – we speak to God in this prayer language. What we say, we do not know, the Spirit of God speaks through us to God and we get the credit for praying a good prayer!

But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.”
The word of God rightly taught is going to hit you hard with prophecy in this time. The hour is indeed late. I still believe based on scriptures we have a ONE MORE TIME and a great revival. Based on scripture – so thus saith the Lord. The word of God taught correctly will also comfort and heal you, free and deliver you, and touch you with grace to be transformed.
Paul says, now that everyone can have the gift, it is for edification (enlightenment, elevation, and instruction), exhortation (encouragement, advice, and incitement), and comfort (well-being, relief, and security). Run every prophecy first through that as a filter. Then filter it through the rest of the word of God.

He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.”
It is true – I pray in tongues and I feel elevated. That is when I get many revelations (I often call downloads). I love prayer meetings where we are all praying in tongues together at the same time. It sounds like what the throne room of heaven must sound like!  It is powerful and wonderful and done often! If everyone is doing it together in agreement it doesn’t edify the body, but it is a prayer of power because of the agreement and the spirit praying the correct way and is an important part of a prayer meeting.
But prophesy elevates the body of believers. As Paul spoke first against the division and then about the body to draw them together – Paul now speaks to them about acting in all the gifts and explains why. People need encouragement to grow. Abused children who are only told negative things become stunted developmentally. WE NEED MORE ENCOURAGEMENT.

I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.”
Paul wishes we all spoke in tongues. There is it. No need to interpret this verse or figure out what he means by that. The Bible is the inspired work of God. God says He wishes we all spoke in tongues. It is written, I believe it and that settles it. So pray for this gift! Pray fervently!!
Prophesy is better. Why do humans read that and say, ‘Oh, I have that gift!! So I am better!’ No, we all can have that gift and just because you received it and move in it does NOT make you better. It is a better gift for the Body than tongues. Operative phrase here is ‘for the body’. Because tongues is best for edifying yourself and prophecy is better for edifying the whole body. And he is talking to a spiritually immature body.
Modern application? Well, the churches that survived the pandemic are finding an influx of hungry people who lost their churches. We are finding many believers who do not know the basics of doctrines because their closed churches failed them in many ways. We are back to a place where every church is filled with immature believers (and hopefully a few mature believers). We need prophecy more and more to encourage and raise up the body and help with growth.

But now, brethren, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching? Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played?”
Remembering you should ask for the gift of tongues – it doesn’t profit the body unless someone can translate it. That is another gift you can ask for. And sometimes someone will speak out in tongues and another will interpret and God gets the glory and the body is edified.

For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle?”
Truth!

So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air. 10 There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance. 11 Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me. 12 Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.”

And there is the sum of it – it is great that these fat little babies want to move in the gift, but if they want to, seek the ones that grow y’all up!

17 For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.”
Rewind back to the prayer meeting where everyone prays in tongues, that I spoke of. Those only work because the prayer meeting leader comes up and says ok we are going to pray for this… and starts a prayer in the common language of the church and prays for a subject. Praying in the language that everyone understands is praying with understanding.  Then once we all agree in spirit, we all just pray in the spirit for that. This again is NOT to edify the body but the pray hard.
But sometimes the power of the lord overtakes someone and they yell out in tongues – Pray that the lord gives you the translation either through your own mouth or someone else’s.  Yes, pray for the translation.
I was once at a church that had a lady speak out in tongues during worship. The head pastor rushed to the stage and grabbed the mic and when she was finished led us in prayer asking God to translate it. Then the translation came and the pastor stopped the music and everything was still and he said: The Lord spoke to us today so let us pay attention. And after a moment of us silently thinking about it. He went around asking people what they got out of it and how does it apply to their lives and were they edified and encouraged. IT WAS AMAZING! And powerful! I wish all pastors applied Paul’s teaching here with such attention to detail. It is many years later and I called up one of the people I went with and asked about it – and they still remember what the Lord spoke that day. We both have been in other services with interpreted tongues since, but do not remember what the Lord said on those days – but we remember the day the Lord STOPPED the service and showed us we were on His time table and in His hands – and He had something to say.

18 I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all; 19 yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.”
Have you ever wondered how much Paul spoke in tongues? Well it was more than the Corinthians did. It feels to me (speculation here) that they knew about tongues before this letter and possibly all wanted to be the person who spoke in tongues in church with the word from the Lord. Or at least thought it was better than prophecy? They were prideful and “better than you” kind of people. It must have been hard to hear Paul say he does something better than them – especially when it seems they think they are doing it well.
I am a competitive person – any of you competitive? I took this statement as a challenge. And it is harder than you think! Because you MUST pray with understanding AND the spirit so literally you must increase your prayer time in order to successfully pray in the spirit (or in tongues) more.

20 Brethren, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature. 21 In the law it is written: “With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me,” says the Lord.
22 Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.”

Tongues is a sign for unbelievers. I was in a church once where the pastor asked the people NOT to pray in tongues in the main sanctuary during Sunday services. It could be done in prayer meetings, advanced study groups, or the overflow room (only if there were no new guests in there).  I was shocked at these rules and asked the pastor why. He did not want to offend and scare off the visitors who might not be saved. He wanted to control their introduction to spiritual things slowly. I showed him this verse and he pointed out the next, which in His mind contradicted that is was a sign to the unbeliever and overruled us showing the unbeliever a sign.

23 Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?”
He was almost on the right track. So, praying in tongues individually, in agreement, in a corporate prayer is good. During the worship service, worshiping in tongues is good – it is good to worship direct to God.
It is bad if you only pray in tongues and there is NO understanding. That is goofy! That isn’t even a thing, is it?! Maybe in Corinth? But seriously.
When I teach, I break into tongues occasionally – but it is because I am teaching prayerfully and sometimes the power of God stirs so powerfully – I must, or I cannot keep speaking. I have also seen other preachers and teachers do this and I am relieved that it isn’t just me. But I am speaking with understanding and that is the lesson and the tongues is a sign.

24 But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is convicted by all. 25And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.”
I can’t argue with Paul here. Like I said, prophecy is a great way to make a bunch of babies grow up fast and save the believers.
I recall as a child growing up in a church with prophecy and tongues – I had a friend who was scared of doing things wrong because Jesus would tell on her and it would be prophesied and she’d be humiliated. I laughed and said, shouldn’t you be more concerned that Jesus saw you do something wrong? Fear God and not man. But it is fun as an adult to laugh at our childish understandings.

26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.”
Here Paul gives us more insight to this fleshly church – remember they are all better than each other, so they all have it all and come prepared to dominate in the service. Services did not always have a leader with a message – remember these were house churches and more casual and met over meals often.  Paul always set up the leadership in the churches he build (like this one) but despite leadership these people all wanted to act out in gifts and tongues. Sometimes I think it might have been better if gifts were earned. (giggles) It is too bad fruits of the spirit were not being worked on as hard – with growth a focus. Let them take the time and energy to mature and grow fruit.

33 For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.”

God is an orderly and structured God. There is an order to everything. If there is chaos, there is flesh and the enemy (and more often than not, witchcraft, manipulation and Jezebel).
I point that out for a reason.
Remember our discussion about the women not having inalienable rights. Women had to be under a father, husband or owner. But the female priest in the temples to goddesses had won their own sovereignty at this point in history – which sparked a feministic movement throughout the land.
Spiritually, women must submit to authority, but not just women – there is an order and we all must be in submission to authority. Under God, we all have inalienable rights. This puts the church in agreement for the women’s rights – but in an orderly fashion.
But since the beginning of time the enemy, and jezebels and witches have taken the opportunity of women’s rights to create chaos and feminism.

So now, picture this scene. Everyone shows up ready to preach, or prophesy – with a prepared message (prophesy is seldom prepared). And in the flesh they think they are entitled to speak – men and women. And they also think they are better, and their message is more important. Church starts and it’s a race to be the first to speak up. These are Roman men. They have been in the city center and other places of debate and speaking and they do not interrupt and just race to be the next to speak up.  Not a cultural thing for the women who interrupt in order to speak. Or the wives who want their husbands heard, could try to manipulate the situation interrupting with questions and comments to discredit the word or distract so her husband would look good. As we go through the New Testament we will run into this feminist movement a few times – you’ll get a better picture for how disruptive these women were becoming.

34 Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says. 35 And if they want to learn something, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.”

They are not permitted to speak. Can we take a moment to mourn for all the words of the Lord smothered shut by this verse taken out of historical and literary context? Where the spirit of the Lord is there is freedom. It is orderly and submissive, but it is freedom. If this is used to oppress a women, the oppressor must repent and ask for revelation. As with everything spiritual it is a slight shift from a muddied down version of it that the enemy sold us – a lie.
In actuality, women held many prominent position in the early church and even in Jesus’s ministry. Women owned businesses and households even financed Jesus’s ministry. There is NOTHING in Christianity that oppresses a women or prevents her from fulfilling the great commission and the call on her life – except one thing. SO let’s be very clear about this. That one thing is her own lack of submission. We do not see this kind of rebellion from men. Men more easily fall into rank and file. But women self-destruct trying to gain rights they already have under God.

36 Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or was it you only that it reached?”
The format of how the church operated under death threat with women and children was already established and a bunch of jezebels were not going to disrupt the flow. The church mirrored the temple – because it is God’s design. SO a main service would have a reading and great discussion among the men with women and children silently watching. BUT that was not the only type of service. These people met almost daily if not daily – and women could speak at other types of events.  But the main event was to model the temple and the synagogues.

The modern church is set up is such a completely different way without discussion and if discussion is permitted, there is public correction of the pastor (do not do that). So can we even apply “not permitted to speak” to the modern format. In truth, NO ONE is permitted to speak on Sunday mornings except the pastor. There is no more reading of the scripture then discussion and prophecy and tongues and worship. We actually do it the opposite now and NO ONE is permitted to discuss, except the pastor. I suppose the change was a good way to control a chaotic mob of fleshly prophets trying to fight to be heard and better then. But it was not Paul’s way of controlling them.

37 If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord. 38 But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.”

Side note – I do think I can scripturally, and by God’s calling, teach the Bible to both men and women. I am limited in my ministry to men. But a male pastor cannot minister to a young married women encouraging her to be the best wife she can be in all those womanly things. He can’t. I can.
I do not feel called to be a head pastor of a church and I question if any women really is called to that position. There are too many situations that come up as a senior pastor that I am not sure a woman has the authority to address mainly the order God created is man then women for authority and protection and how then can a women pastor be the authority and protection for men. Yet women can for children and other women and mixed groups under the authority of a man.  Women can be associate pastors, missionaries, evangelists and teachers. But honestly the rules for head pastor being a woman are only known in part.

39 Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues. 40 Let all things be done decently and in order.”

So there it is – do it in order not in oppression.

Join us this weekend for some more wisdom reading from Psalms, presented without explanation. On Monday we will come back to 1 Corinthians and begin where we left off. During next week we will complete 1 Corinthians and begin 2 Corinthians. I believe 2 Corinthians will also be a powerful and life changing study as we all seek God and strive to submit to His will in our lives and get to know Him better.
