Sound the Alarm (Part 1)

“Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. It is close at hand” Joel 2:1 NIV

Dear Heavenly Father – You are the One True God. Beside you there is no other.  I acknowledge your Lordship over my life. I praise and thank you for all you have done! Please help me as I search myself to see if there is any ways within me to repent of. In the name of Jesus – Amen

I guess, after the new year’s Feast of Trumpets, I am still thinking about trumpets and one week away is the Day of Atonement (and this year, it is more important than ever before – my spirit sees it).  I also see the signs of the time, which have been amply described in the Old Testament and briefly described by Jesus in the New Testament. And when you put it all together in my mind – I can’t help but spend a lot of time in the very short – but ever so important book of Joel.

Recently the president of the United States came under fire for “playing down the potential crisis of the pandemic in order to avoid mass panic [which could lead to unpredictable behavior instead of people following leadership in an orderly way]”.  Yet in New York State, the governor did the same thing, telling people it was safe to ride the packed subways and go to the Chinese new year celebrations and then New York became the hardest hit State (with the highest death tolls). The New York governor and his political party are the ones accusing the president. And I do not care what you might have heard otherwise – I live in New York and I work in health care and I have experienced it. This is also fresh on my mind and I try to reason and understand – Avoiding mass panic is usually a good thing.  If a building catches fire and the people do not know and are evacuated orderly – there is a low statistical chance of injury and death. This is why hospitals, nursing homes and other health care agencies all practice fire drills.  To avoid panic.
It is true – I was once inside a nursing home that was on fire.  Staff thought we were doing an evacuation drill and did not realize until they saw it in the paper the next day that they were actually inside a burning building.  Everything was calm and orderly. Zero injuries & zero deaths.  This is what happens when you avoid mass panic.

And after saying all that – I now say it is time to panic! (But please stay orderly – we serve a God of order.)  However, we are rapidly running out of time! Blow the trumpets in Zion – In the Holy Mountain! Sound an Alarm! Time is running out and we see prophesies being fulfilled. There are even passages in the Bible we did not associated to being prophetic of these times – yet, word for word we see them happening. Wake up! Sound the alarm – Panic!

Why are people still asleep?
Why are we overwhelmed and concerned with the cares of the world? With our daily lives? With being upset that you are having the same fight with your spouse every night about what to have for dinner? Who really cares what’s for dinner?? Just shove food in your mouth and go proclaim to the world that the Day of the Lord is close at hand!
We need to panic! In the sense that we need to be proclaiming the gospel. The time is short – the time for repentance is now! Right now!

“Blow the trumpet in Zion; sound the alarm on my holy hill. Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the Lord is coming. It is close at hand –
a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army comes, such as never was in ancient times nor ever will be in ages to come.

Before them fire devours, behind them a flame blazes. Before them the land is like the garden of Eden, behind them, a desert waste – nothing escapes them.
They have the appearance of horses; they gallop along like cavalry.
With a noise like that of chariots they leap over the mountaintops, like a crackling fire consuming stubble, like a mighty army drawn up for battle.

At the sight of them, nations are in anguish; every face turns pale.
They charge like warriors; they scale walls like soldiers. They all march in line, not swerving from their course.
They do not jostle each other; each marches straight ahead. They plunge through defenses without breaking ranks.
They rush upon the city; they run along the wall. They climb into the houses; like thieves they enter through the windows.

10 Before them the earth shakes, the heavens tremble, the sun and moon are darkened, and the stars no longer shine.
11 The Lord thunders at the head of his army; his forces are beyond number, and mighty is the army that obeys his command. The day of the Lord is great; it is dreadful. Who can endure it?

12 “Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.”
13 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.
14 Who knows? He may turn and relent and leave behind a blessing – grain offerings and drink offerings for the Lord your God.

15 Blow the trumpet in Zion, declare a holy fast, call a sacred assembly.
16 Gather the people, consecrate the assembly; bring together the elders, gather the children, those nursing at the breast. Let the bridegroom leave his room and the bride her chamber.
17 Let the priests, who minister before the Lord, weep between the portico and the altar. Let them say, “Spare your people, Lord. Do not make your inheritance an object of scorn, a byword among the nations. Why should they say among the peoples, ‘Where is their God?’”
Joel 2:1-17 NIV
