“Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, so that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,” Acts 3:19 NKJV
Dear Heavenly Father – Thank you Lord for your grace. Thank you that you are faithful when we repent to forgive us our sins. Please speak to me and to everyone reading this as we know your word is empowering and transformative. Open our eyes, wake us up, and please open our understanding. In the name of Jesus – Amen
Grace – oh grace, how far must we let grace abound? – but through grace we find mercy and forgiveness, conviction to repentance. Grace! Glorious grace! The kind of grace that brings all glory to God! Because if not for God, where would we be?
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.” Romans 8:1 KJV
First hold in your heart that all conviction is from God unto repentance and all condemnation is of the enemy to bondage to sin. Then, we can move on.
This week as have addressed many conditions in the church, the body of Christ – and why we need to address them, repentance, and growing a heart after God’s own heart. I am well aware that many of the people reading my posts here are hungry for the meat of the scriptures.
Let me explain. When my son was born, he could not eat meat. He drank milk. At some point in his first year, the doctor said I could add cereal to his diet. As his stomach matured it could handle and actually needed more than just the milk. Slowly from that point we added other food all ground up into mush. And then as he grew even more we slowly switched him over to solid foods and meat. Soon enough He was eating more and more and he grew into a strong young man.
Now – what if he refused the cereal and would only drink milk? Eventually, he would not survive.
And what if he made it past the milk to mushy baby food and then refused anything solid? In the long run he would not get enough nutrition and would die.
Spiritually and biblically, the word of God is referred to as food many times.
“Taste and see that the Lord is good;” Psalm 34:8a NIV
But then that means we must go from easy Bible study lessons – learning the basics to more difficult Bible study lessons. We must go from understanding basic right and wrong kinds of sins to learning that even if it is morally right is may not be expedient and it may be in direct disobedience to God if He said otherwise for that situation. We go from baby food, or milk, to the meat of the word. We go from the children’s church lessons to understanding the depths of the scriptures.
“Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. 2 I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. 3 You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?” 1 Corinthians 3:1-3 NIV
A few times last week I spoke with people about how difficult it is to be a mere human trying to serve God. Something you may not understand until you’ve tried to live without compromise. Paul admits to his human mistakes and yet he strived daily to walk in a way that was in complete submission and obedience to God. So you and I can’t say that it is impossible. Pray to understand – stretch and grow to see – is there an area of scriptural you are still a baby? Do you need to basics again? I can point you to a good basic Bible study. You won’t get baby food here on a daily basis. I am not saying I won’t study and discuss some basics, but haven’t we grown too much for just baby food?
Yet – In the modern church, we have so many fat babies looking for nice messages to make them feel nice and look nice without having to sacrifice the fleshly desires and repent of the deep hidden sins. Fat babies who just want to say there are a Christian and lie to themselves about the certainty of their salvation while refusing to hear that if you aren’t hot for God, and are only lukewarm, he will cast you out. Fat little babies who like the story of Noah and fondly remember drawing rainbows in Sunday school as a child – instead of confronting the fact that the world at that time was described the same as the world today; AND didn’t God send a flood to destroy all that evil?!?! Destroy the whole planet?? And fat babies want to ignore the righteous judgement of God in that ‘story’ and assume it cannot apply to the evil world we are in today; they go around saying everything is ok and trying not to offend anyone. Are you a fat baby???
“11 We have much to say about this, but it is hard to make it clear to you because you no longer try to understand. 12 In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! 13 Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. 14 But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:11-14 NIV
How many of you should be teaching me as you have been a Christian longer than I have, yet here you are reading this and being taught by me – because the grace of God. Do you understand? It is the grace of God. All and act of His undeserved favor and love – His mercy and goodness. To Him be the glory.
This passage in Hebrews chapter 5 does not end with the chapter, but it continues in chapter 6 with a stern and frightening warning about fat baby sliding away from their relationships with God to eternal damnation:
“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, 2 instruction about cleansing rites, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. 3 And God permitting, we will do so.
4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.
9 Even though we speak like this, dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case—the things that have to do with salvation. 10 God is not unjust; he will not forget your work and the love you have shown him as you have helped his people and continue to help them. 11 We want each of you to show this same diligence to the very end, so that what you hope for may be fully realized. 12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.” Hebrews 6:1-12 NIV
Verse 9- ‘even though we speak like this dear friends, we are convinced of better things in your case’. This is true. I think better things in you, my reader’s, case as well – or God would not have me sharing these things to warn you.
Verse 12 – do not become lazy. Pick up that Bible and ask God to open your eyes and understanding so you might read it and get the good meat. Get the banquet he has prepared. Feast!
Yes we studied fasting not too long ago – there is a time for fasting and a time for feasting. Feast on the words of the Lord! It’s time for the meat – the deep stuff. The hard messages. The good stuff. Amen?
If you don’t already, and today you would like to have a relationship with a God who can communicate with you and be part of your life (and protect you) – one who is full of mighty power and tender love, then please know that I have put the “A, B, C’s of Salvation” in my introduction.
