“Ho! Every one who thirsts, come to the waters; and you who have no money come, buy and eat. Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. 2 “Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy? Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good, And delight yourself in abundance. 3 “Incline your ear and come to Me. Listen, that you may live; And I will make an everlasting covenant with you, According to the faithful mercies shown to David.” Isaiah 55:1-3 NIV
Dear Heavenly Father – please continue to reveal to us what you are telling us . We are expecting to hear from you, be fed some of this good free food, and learn your amazing love, promises and covenant for us. Please give us ears to hear and eyes to see and open our understanding. – Amen
After spending all that time swimming and the pristine waters of life found in Isaiah 54, I ask God, what comes next. That was such a good study! How can I find something else that good to dig into? He simply says: turn the page.
Well, this looks promising! Are you thirsty for the living waters? Hungry for God?? This chapter literally starts by telling us it is a meal! A solid scriptural meal.
“O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.” Psalm 34:8 KJV
I won’t dig through the chapter line by line and do another multiple part series. (I hope.) So I’ll just pull out some tasty treats for us to chew on (and think about) for the day.
“Seek the Lord while He may be found; Call upon Him while He is near.” Isaiah 55:6 NIV
You and I, living in such a time as this, where seeking God is so important for us in this moment, and for the outcomes of His plan over the world. Seek Him. I seem to be saying that a lot lately. In the New Testament where it says seek him first (Matt 6:33), Jesus is speaking to both the believers and the unbelievers. It is the same here. If you believe in God – if you are a follower of Christ – or not: seek Him! (I know it sound kind of bossy, but there is a hint of a warning there, that He may not always be found. So seek Him now. It is not as much of a bossy tone as it is an urgent tone.)
“6 Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near. 7 Let the wicked forsake his way and the unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return to the Lord, And He will have compassion on him, And to our God, For He will abundantly pardon.
8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” Isaiah 55:6-9 NIV
I pray that you seek Him. I pray that I continue to seek Him (I cannot do it without His grace). I have so many love ones and friends who aren’t living according to the will of God – not even attempting to read the Bible and obey. And as many of you know my heart hurts for them. Jesus is returning soon for His sheep and they aren’t ready. And I think of all the people I see daily who don’t know Christ, like I do and I hurt for them as well. This relationship with God is so amazing, I want everyone to experience it. So, I read this and cannot help but pray for them as well:
Heavenly Father, please impress the urgency on their hearts to seek you. Let our wicked love ones, friends, and acquaintances, forsake and turn from their own ways and plans, towards your ways and plan. In the name of Jesus, let the unrighteous people on our hearts, forsake their own thoughts – Please return them to you! Have compassion on them and abundantly pardon them!!! Amen
I enjoy how this goes from us praying for the lives of our love ones, right into God saying: “by the way, I am going to do it. I am. But I am doing it My way – and not how you think.”
Let me tell you, I pray every scripture I can for them. I think about them, maybe, having a road to Damascus experience like Paul. I think about a giant whale swallowing them up until they agree to do as the Lord says – like Jonah. And you better believe I have enough faith to have a whale show up this far inland! Or even, I think about the right person saying the right thing at the right time and it taking hold like a seedling starting to grow. But it’s a waste of my time to think about how I would do it. I could use that time better, praying or praising. Because God’s ways aren’t our ways.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him,” Proverbs 3:5-6a NIV
So while God rescues those who we are praying for – we should busy ourselves with praying, seeking, and submitting to Him. Busy yourself with learning the word of God and learning how to speak it and use it. Because:
“10 For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, And do not return there without watering the earth And making it bear and sprout, and furnishing seed to the sower and bread to the eater; 11 So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:10-11 NIV
In John chapter 1 it says that Jesus is the Word of God – Speaking the word, is speaking Jesus into people’s life and their situations. Jesus will accomplish what God desires. He will succeed. Amen!!
So, let’s return to the beginning of the chapter again. First, this is food. God’s word is our daily bread – it will satisfy and sustain us. And then in verse 3 it says: “everlasting covenant with you”. Again, the word covenant. The next section, as we saw, is about turning away from sin and towards God – it’s about repenting. It is also a prayer for the unatoned.
Now it is time to see the blessings of turning to Christ, of taking part in this covenant with God.
“12For you will go out with joy and be led forth with peace; the mountains and the hills will break forth into shouts of joy before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands. 13 “Instead of the thorn bush the cypress will come up, and instead of the nettle the myrtle will come up, and it will be a memorial to the Lord, for an everlasting sign which will not be cut off.” Isaiah 55:12-13 NIV
God keeps telling us how much He loves us and wants this covenant with us – last chapter He said He was our husband – and I showed you a few verses about His followers being the bridegroom. A Biblical marriage is a covenant and this is the same level of love and commitment He is trying to share with us. He will never leave us nor forsake us – a much better Husband than an earthly man.
And we will have joy! Joy in this negative world! And we will have peace – in a world full of fear. And the world will raise up in joy to praise the Lord for making you! And God will cause a memorial to Himself for an everlasting sign – a wedding band, so to speak. Doesn’t it make you just want to praise Him.
If you don’t already, and today you would like to, have a relationship with a God who can communicate with you and be part of your life (and protect you) – one who is full of mighty power and tender love, then please know that I have put the “A, B, C’s of Salvation” in my introduction.
