Still Small Voice

11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord Passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.

13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

14 And he said, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; because the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life.”

1 Kings 19:11-14 NKJV

Let’s start in prayer: Dear heavenly father, as we read this, open our eyes and understanding; give us ears to hear what you are saying. In Jesus name we pray. Amen

Lately it feels as if we have and/or are living through a wind that could shake a mountain, and then an earthquake, and then fire.  I live in the United States. I recognize that we are having a rather easy time compared to the global news.  We had the pandemic and then some riots (please note that I am not saying protests are bad – just the riots and looting). Other countries have been devastated by locust, earthquakes, wars, as well as the pandemic and riots. Many Christian are being killed for their faith in other countries. Multiple countries have reported strange things in the skies, including my own – here the government put out a press release saying if you see anything please report it, yadda, yadda, yadda. And the news of it has since been suppressed.

But I am encouraged, because the Lord wasn’t in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. The Lord came in the stillness afterward, with a quiet voice.

While we prayerfully fight back at the principality of fear, the principality of chaos has moved in. I don’t know about you, but I am tired. I have also been fighting off allergy symptoms and congestion (I do not want it to turn into an infection). The doctor has me on medicine that makes me groggy and clouds my mind. Any progress I might be making praying for calm clarity in the midst of Fear and Chaos – feels rather lost in this medicine head. (Please pray for my healing.)

But none the less – I am encouraged, because the Lord wasn’t in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. The Lord came in the stillness afterward, with a quiet voice.

Can you imagine what it might have been like up a mountain, in a cave and the wind is so strong it is ripping rocks off the mountain.  I do not think I would be like Elijah and stay inside that cave during an earthquake – it could have caved in on him!  And fire – what was this fire? Like a forest fire? Just a random wall of fire?!  (I will admit – with my groggy medicine head I thought about this scene and what Elijah must have experienced, a little too much.)

The Holy Spirit comes with the sound of a rushing mighty wind (Acts 2:2) – Just the sound. Elijah knew God wasn’t in it because this was an active destructive and not just a sound.
“The thief does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly.” John 10:10 NKJV
Here we see in the book of John that Jesus says it is the enemy who destroys – Jesus came to give life.

Although this passage in 1st Kings doesn’t directly say it – I can’t help but notice God protection. The wind, earthquake and fire did not harm Elijah at all. As we go through some crazy things happening all over the world we too can be encouraged – we are protected under the wing of the Most High when we make him our refuge (Psalm 91).

“God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, Even though the earth be removed, And though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea; Though its waters roar and be troubled, Though the mountains shake with its swelling. Selah” Psalm 46:1-3 NKJV

And then later, in that same chapter of Psalms, about how strong, mighty and powerful God is and all He can do – we find this:

“Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10 NKJV

Be still and stop striving and trying in our own power, stop being overwhelmed, stop responding emotionally, stop being distracted – Just stop for a second to wake up and understand and acknowledge God for who He is and what He is doing! Focus on God.

While the wind is still blowing and the earth still quaking and the fire still raging – Hold still and know that isn’t where God is! He is working in the quiet places. He is guiding us from behind.

“and thine ears shall hear a word behind thee, saying, This is the way, walk ye in it; when ye turn to the right hand, and when ye turn to the left.” Isaiah 30:21 ASV

But most importantly, He will never leave us nor forsake us (Deuteronomy 31:6 & Hebrews 13:5). God was with Elijah and protected him while the wind, shaking and fire happened.  God was also there, after, in a still small voice.  God is also here with us, protecting us now.

When God was ready to talk, Elijah got right to the point.  He didn’t even take time to answer God’s question: What are you doing here?
Nope, Elijah was there to talk to God and he had things to say.

So imagine if you will – it is you on that mountain and here you are speaking with God.  What would you say?

And we have that opportunity through the grace of Christ Jesus to come before Him daily and pray, worship, ask for anything we want.
Elijah didn’t talk to God about the wind, earthquake or fire – he did not get distracted. He went before God with his hearts cry.
“I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts”

Be zealous for Him; and be encouraged, because the Lord isn’t in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. The Lord comes in the stillness, with a quiet voice.

Take some time today and quiet yourself, worship in the knowledge that He is God, and listen.
