I will lift up my eyes to the hills—From whence comes my help?Psalm 121
2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not allow your foot to be moved; He who keeps you will not slumber.
4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
6 The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night.
7 The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.
8 The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.
Today was such a beautiful day. I ran to the store for a few essentials. After the first store, I was planning on running to the grocery store – but as I walked to my car I thought, no, I should go for a drive to the country and enjoy this beautiful day.
My sweet friend (the one I am praying fervently for) had messaged that he wanted to see me, maybe. So I messaged him back and said, let’s go for a drive – windows down, sun shining, and see where it takes us. (I have backed away from him. I seldom respond to his messages and I am giving him space to seek God on his own and space for God to move. This leave me often wondering is God moving? Is my sweet friend softening his heart towards God? Is he seeking God? I ask God and feel, it isn’t mine to know. What is mine is to pray that my friend turns from his sin towards God and let’s God transform him.)
Inviting him along for the ride… was this wrong?
We drove into the country to an area where I grew up. Rolling hills overlooking a valley. Lush green farmland and protected State Forests all mixed in. I thought about this psalm – I will left up my eyes to the hills! The rolling hills were so beautiful. Mind you these hills have peak elevations of 1,500 to 2,000 feet – they aren’t small hills.
We made small talk, talked about my childhood out there, and the times he had been out there. And of course we talked about God. Then, as we stopped at the bottom of a sharp descent – we noticed smoke coming from my front brakes. There was no place to pull over or stop for about a quarter mile down the road – so I proceeded slowly until we got there. Sure enough – my front drivers brake was shot. (Back brakes were just done a few months ago – so we were ok to drive as long as I went slowly and no hard braking.)
I was in the parking lot of my favorite greenhouse. I was hoping to pick up some pretty plants to fill in my garden. But now I am feeling the woe of financial pressures – and unexpected car repair. Thankfully my friend went to the restroom and I had a moment. I thought through the rest of this Psalm.
“From whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord” Yes, and AMEN! I then recalled the morning devotional I did – which spoke about peace. The glorious peace of Jesus. I took a deep breath and I handed it over to God.
I was not foolish and did not buy any plants as I will need a repair – but God will make a way.
For the ride home, we took a route with less declines – just to be safer. I would have rather spent the day out there (covered bridges, nature walks, lookout points, etc). Instead we headed back.
The wheel started to squeak, probably the warning noise or whatever mechanics call it. I stopped again to make sure it wasn’t something else (as best as I could see without taking it apart on the side of the road). I said to my friend – I am not going to lie, this concerns me. He said he is always surprised at how calmly I handle things.
“He will not allow your foot to be moved” – AMEN! I was standing on the promise that God will provide for my needs and right then I needed safety, peace and a car repair!
“He who keeps you will not slumber.” – and again – AMEN! I was protected on my way out there.
God knew my brakes would fail, yet he kept me – “Behold, He who keeps Israel Shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade at your right hand. The sun shall not strike you by day, Nor the moon by night.”
We got back to his place to drop him off and he said he wanted me to follow him to my house so if the brakes go – I would hit him and not someone else. OK.
“The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in From this time forth, and even forevermore.” AND the Lord did preserve me – going out there and coming back! He is my help, even when I didn’t know I had a need.
Back at my house, my friend asked if I want to go back to his house to watch a movie. (Hmmm, no. Not without my car so I could leave at any time. Not without someone around so I could be tempted and not held accountable. No.) My son was home so I invited him in. We can watch a movie and be held accountable.
“The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul.” He makes a way out of temptation – he shall keep us from evil.
We watched a movie that I had seen before and I was able to spend the time praying for him quietly in my head. I laid my hands on his arm and just prayed.
Then, as it was time to leave – he gave me a hug. I reminded him that I love him and I am still praying for him. He said he prayed and asked God if I still loved him – and me spending the day with him was an answer to his prayers.
I reminded him I can love the sinner and hate the sin. I Love him – but I have subjected myself to God’s will and I am constrained by that right now.
Now I sit here praising the Lord for such a day!
I have so many expensive needs and such a small income – and prices are going up. But Look how God planned out this day. I may need brakes now – but God already knew. And God has made a way. (I don’t know what way that is – but He has it in his hands)
I am still thinking Lord HELP ME! Help me with the car, Help me with my friend, Help me by working in my friend’s life, Help me, help me, help me…
But I praise him for all that He did today! He never leaves us nor forsakes us – Ooooo How I love that verse. Let’s read it in the Amplified Bible:
“Let your character or moral disposition be free from love of money [including greed, avarice, lust, and craving for earthly possessions] and be satisfied with your present [circumstances and with what you have]; for He [God] Himself has said, I will not in any way fail you nor give you up nor leave you without support. [I will] not, [I will] not, [I will] not in any degree leave you helpless nor forsake nor let [you] down (relax My hold on you)! [Assuredly not!]” Hebrews 13:5 AMP
He will not, will not, will not! In anyway leave me helpless! <– see that word? Wasn’t I just asking for help! So Good!
Look to the hills!
