1 My son, if you accept my wordsProverbs 2:1-11 NIV
and store up my commands within you,
2 turning your ear to wisdom
and applying your heart to understanding—
3 indeed, if you call out for insight
and cry aloud for understanding,
4 and if you look for it as for silver
and search for it as for hidden treasure,
5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord
and find the knowledge of God.
6 For the Lord gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.
7 He holds success in store for the upright,
he is a shield to those whose walk is blameless,
8 for he guards the course of the just
and protects the way of his faithful ones.
9 Then you will understand what is right and just
and fair—every good path.
10 For wisdom will enter your heart,
and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.
11 Discretion will protect you,
and understanding will guard you.
Seeking wisdom… when grace is the vehicle moving you along wisdom is the steering wheel. Wisdom comes from God and through studying the Bible and spending valuable time in prayer. The more you read and pray the better you understand God and it is God who imparts wisdom. Wisdom is a gift.
Sometimes no matter how much I read and pray I still find myself doing and saying foolish things. God must just look at me and shake his head sometimes. We are living in grace until Christ’s return and through grace we are learning and striving to be righteous. At lease we ought to be. And to be righteous we must do our best to obey the Word of the Lord and when/if we fall, ask for forgiveness and help to not do it again. Get back up! Do not wallow in condemnation but bask in mercy and grace and get back into the Word!
“for though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes.” Proverbs 24:16 NIV
I always figured righteous people didn’t fall. Even my mom says older Christians do not struggle and they grow out of it. And even though I learned this verse as a child – I developed the stinking thinking that at some point the struggle is gone. And when it wasn’t, I felt that I could never get this right and give up. (By the way, we of our own accord cannot do this and get it right on our own – only through the grace from God through Christ Jesus can we even begin to do this.)
This struggle does not end as long as you are striving to grow in Christ – He will always reveal new areas to grow in. This is the wisdom of God – you will fall so get back up. This is the blameless walk, this is faithfulness to God and through this we are righteous and able to claim the blessings of the righteous in the Bible. Not of my own doing but through grace.
I on my own am evil and make poor decisions. This is the wisdom of God to take sinners like me and you and make us righteous through our own weakness and failures by God’s strength and mercy! His wisdom is not the wisdom of man.
“But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty” 1 Corinthians 1:27 KVJ
In this verse he isn’t referring to the people who are wise in Christ, but here when he says ‘the wise’ he means the ones who the world sees as wise; the wisdom of man.
Let’s read this again, but read the passage, in the amplified Bible for a little more depth into the wisdom of God:
27 But God has selected [for His purpose] the foolish things of the world to shame the wise [revealing their ignorance], and God has selected [for His purpose] the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong [revealing their frailty]. 28 God has selected [for His purpose] the insignificant (base) things of the world, and the things that are despised and treated with contempt, [even] the things that are nothing, so that He might reduce to nothing the things that are, 29 so that no one may [be able to] boast in the presence of God.1 Corinthians 1:27-29
You see, Godly wisdom is not our normal understanding. God often does things we do not understand because we do not fully understand His wisdom and His ways.
“Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5 KJV
“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5 NIV
God’s wisdom flows as generously as His grace and mercy. All we need to do is ask. (Of course reading the word and praying are always helpful in getting wisdom, as well, but it isn’t something obtained by us, but given from God.) It’s is something God works in us…
“for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose.” Philippians 2:13
If we could obtain this Godly wisdom on our own through just our own study of the word of God, then we could boast of our selves – this is why it is given as a gift, so no man can boast but God can be glorified through it. (1 Corinthians 1:29)
Pray for wisdom today as the world struggles to find the wisest path to follow during this pandemic – pray for wisdom as you grow in the Lord and he is preparing your path – pray for wisdom as trials and temptations come your way so that you may find the right path through – pray for wisdom and be the foolish thing that confounds the wise of this world.
